Standard applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on the final date in each period.
Eligibility: You may apply to Media Studies when you have completed all four prerequisites or have completed three
prerequisites, including Media Studies 10/W10, and are enrolled in the fourth prerequisite during the term in which you apply.
All prerequisites must be taken for letter grades with the special exception of spring 2020 P grades from any school as well as
fall 2020, spring 2021, summer 2021, and fall 2022 P grades from UC Berkeley only. You must take approved courses to satisfy
prerequisite requirements. Media Studies does not accept high school exam scores.
Standard Application You may submit a standard application if you have met the following standard application requirements:
● a major application GPA of 3.2 in the prerequisites and any course you have taken that satisfies a major course
requirement;
● a grade of B- or better in Media Studies 10/W10 (or an approved equivalent taken before fall 2020);
● If you started UC Berkeley as a freshman or transferred before your junior year: have completed no more than 70
units (excluding high school exam scores, community college courses taken while in high school and excess P.E.
units);
OR
If you started UC Berkeley as a junior transfer: are applying during your first two semesters at UC Berkeley. Junior
transfer students may also submit standard applications during their first summer following their UC Berkeley
admissions semester; see summer application period above if relevant.
The major application GPA will be based on the letter grades for courses relevant to the major as noted above. If you
have only approved P grades due to UC Berkeley and L&S COVID P grades or L&S Fall 2022 Strike P grades policies
as noted above, substitute your overall GPA as your major application GPA.
A standard application includes 1) a Media Studies 2024 Standard Applicant Information Form and 2) a Major
Declaration Form, which needs to be signed by only you, not a major advisor, before submission; and 3) copies of
unofficial transcripts if you have taken prerequisite and major-related courses at other schools and have not yet
submitted your official transcripts to UC Berkeley.
You will need to list your chosen Media Studies Area of Concentration (Digital Studies, Global Cultural Studies, or
Media Law & Policy) on your application; see Requirements on the Media Studies website for information regarding
each.
Transferred Coursework If you satisfied a prerequisite for the major at a California community college, verify that you took the
correct prerequisite(s) on assist.org. All other transferred course(s) taken to satisfy Media Studies course requirement(s) must
be approved by Dr. Josh Jackson, Assistant Director of Media Studies, prior to applying to the major. See the “Intended Majors
Course Substitution Form” on the Media Studies website.
* This application is not for students admitted to UC Berkeley as freshmen beginning fall 2023 and later.
